Dubai, June 9, 2025 – His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice‑President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ceremonially laid the foundation stone for the first station of the Dubai Metro Blue Line at Dubai Creek Harbor. Marking a major milestone in public transport, Sheikh Mohammed approved the design of the iconic Emaar Properties Station, poised to be the tallest metro station in the world at 74 meters.

A Bold New Metro Line

  • The Blue Line spans 30 km, featuring 14 stations, both underground and elevated.
  • It will connect key areas such as Dubai Festival City, Ras Al Khor, International City, Silicon Oasis, Academic City, and will provide direct links to the Red and Green Lines—creating a comprehensive 131 km metro network with 78 stations and 168 trains

Iconic Station & Architectural Marvel

The Emaar Properties Station stands out with a seashell-inspired exterior and an interior reflecting elements like heritage, earth, air, fire, and water. Renowned architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the minds behind landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, designed this structure as a new “gateway to the future”

Sustainability & Connectivity Highlights

  • This is Dubai’s first metro project to achieve Platinum green‑building certification, complete with bus bays, taxi stands, bike and e‑scooter zones, as well as accessible facilities.
  • The line will reduce road congestion by about 20%, support the creation of “20‑minute city” neighbourhoods, and drive anticipated land-value increases of up to 25% around its stations

Milestone & Legacy

  • Construction begins on June 9, 2025, echoing the significance of the original metro launch on 9/9/2009.
  • The Blue Line is slated for completion on September 9, 2029, marking exactly 20 years since the inaugural metro service.

Economic & Environmental Impact

  • With a Dhs 56 billion (≈ £3.6 billion) investment, the Blue Line is projected to reach 200,000 daily passengers by 2030, increasing to 320,000 by 2040.
  • It is expected to deliver AED 56.5 billion in benefits by 2040, stemming from reduced travel times, lower fuel consumption, fewer accidents, and lower emissions

Vision for the Future

Sheikh Mohammed highlighted Dubai’s ongoing commitment to creating “the best city to live in the world” through visionary infrastructure, stating:

“We continue to develop Dubai… we continue to build the best city to live in the world.”

What Next?

  • International City 1 will serve as a major interchange on the line.
  • The project includes a 1.3 km metro bridge over Dubai Creek, adding both engineering distinction and functional connectivity.
  • Work is underway, and the RTA forecasts passenger numbers to exceed 300 million annually by 2026, with full line capacity expected by 2029.
