Google has secured a landmark $3 billion agreement to purchase up to 3 gigawatts of hydropower from facilities in Pennsylvania over the next 20 years. This deal represents the largest corporate clean energy purchase of its kind and is a key part of Google’s plan to meet the growing energy demands of its expanding artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing infrastructure.
The agreement includes power purchase contracts for two hydropower plants, Holtwood and Safe Harbor, and involves plans to modernize and relicense these facilities to ensure long-term, reliable clean energy generation.
Hydropower offers a steady, round-the-clock energy supply that is particularly suited to powering data centers that require consistent electricity, unlike more intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind. This aligns with Google’s commitment to operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy.
Alongside this deal, Google is investing $25 billion in new data centers across Pennsylvania and neighboring states over the next two years, reinforcing its role in advancing the digital economy while supporting sustainability goals.
The partnership highlights the growing trend among technology giants to secure firm, renewable energy sources to power their infrastructure and reduce environmental impact, marking a significant milestone in the intersection of clean energy and cutting-edge technology.
