Located on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, the Hinatuan Enchanted River is a captivating destination known for its unique beauty and the legends that surround it. Flowing into the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean in Barangay Talisay, Hinatuan, the river earned its name “enchanted” after a diplomat described the location in a poem, referring to its magical nature.
The Enchanted River has an air of mystery, fueled by local stories and myths. One of the most popular legends claims that fairies added sapphire and jade colors to the river, making its waters crystal clear and blue. Local fishermen also believe the river is home to special fish that cannot be caught. For the locals, the river is considered sacred, protected by “engkanto” (supernatural spirits) that dwell in its waters.
With a depth of about 24 meters, the river is relatively short but has an underground cave system that feeds into it. In 1999, explorer Alex Santos began exploring these caves, continuing the work until 2014. This led to the discovery of a hidden cave entrance 30 meters deep, adding more mystery to the area. 
In addition to being a charming tourist spot, the Hinatuan Bay, where the river meets the sea, serves as a habitat for various species of sea turtles. Since 2017, the local government has prohibited swimming in the main pool of the river, but designated swimming areas for tourists are still available. The daily feeding of the fish, held at 3:00 PM, is a special attraction, offering visitors a unique experience.
Although the Enchanted River is a great place to visit year-round, the rainy season, from May to November, can make exploration more difficult. Therefore, the best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to April, especially in March and April, when the weather is more pleasant. However, be prepared for large crowds, as the popularity of the destination continues to grow each year.
With its mesmerizing beauty, fascinating history, and intriguing legends, the Hinatuan Enchanted River remains one of the most remarkable natural wonders in the Philippines.
