Physics Wallah Secures $210 Million in Funding to Fuel Expansion Amid Ed-Tech Challenges
Indian education technology startup Physics Wallah (PW) has raised $210 million in its latest funding round, boosting its valuation to $2.8 billion. This investment round, led by Hornbill Capital with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners, GSV, and WestBridge, highlights Physics Wallah’s rapid growth and its strategy to tap into India’s broader educational market.
Pioneering Accessible Education in India
Founded in 2020, Physics Wallah has positioned itself as a leader in India’s ed-tech sector by focusing on affordable education for students across the country. The company’s unique value proposition lies in offering low-cost courses for competitive examinations, with prices averaging below $50, making it accessible to students from low-income backgrounds. CEO Alakh Pandey emphasizes that their mission is to serve “the remaining 99%” of students who lack access to elite coaching institutes.
Operating on a freemium model, Physics Wallah offers free online courses via YouTube, with additional paid features such as personalized homework and tests. This hybrid approach has enabled the company to grow exponentially. In the fiscal year ending March 2024, Physics Wallah reported a remarkable 250% revenue growth year-over-year. Pandey expects the company to achieve the “highest absolute” EBITDA in the current fiscal year, signaling strong profitability.
Expansion Through Strategic Acquisitions
In addition to organic growth, Physics Wallah is eyeing strategic acquisitions to strengthen its presence in underserved geographies and expand its content offerings. “Consolidation, we are open to it if it’s based on different geography that we cannot serve to, and if it caters to content and community first,” Pandey shared.
Last year, the company acquired a 50% stake in Kerala-based ed-tech firm Xylem Learning, marking its first major equity investment. With broader internet penetration across India, Physics Wallah sees further potential in expanding its hybrid education model, combining digital courses with physical classroom infrastructure in smaller cities and villages.
Navigating the Ed-Tech Landscape in India
The rise of ed-tech in India, particularly during the pandemic, led to explosive growth across the sector. However, this rapid expansion also contributed to the downfall of some high-profile players like Byju’s, which once held a $22 billion valuation but is now facing multiple insolvency proceedings.
Pandey attributes Physics Wallah’s success to its clear focus on delivering quality educational content and prioritizing student outcomes rather than pursuing aggressive marketing or excessive valuations. “Education is different. It’s not like any other startup that you can grow and talk about crazy valuation … you are actually working to change the life of students,” he remarked.
The Path Forward for Physics Wallah
Despite challenges in the broader ed-tech sector, Pandey and co-founder Prateek Maheshwari are optimistic about the future. Maheshwari believes the market for online learning is still expanding, particularly as students in smaller towns gain access to better internet infrastructure. “The learners are increasing year-on-year,” he noted, underscoring the potential for sustained growth.
Looking ahead, Physics Wallah is also planning an initial public offering (IPO), though the timeline remains flexible. “An IPO is something that we will do,” Pandey said, adding that the company is focused on strong governance and running the business like a public company well before any formal listing.
