Airbnb’s Brian Chesky says he wishes he were 26 again — the tools AI gives founders now are “so much more powerful”

Brian Chesky built Airbnb from an air mattress in his San Francisco apartment into a company worth tens of billions of dollars. Nearly two decades later, the 45-year-old CEO says that if he were starting out today, he’d rather be 26 than sitting in his current seat — because of what generative AI now lets a small team do.

Speaking on the Silicon Valley Girl podcast, Chesky recalled his thinking before ChatGPT’s arrival: “Thank god I was born the time I did, because now is a tougher time,” he said he used to tell himself, pointing to how crowded and capital-intensive building a company had become. “And then post-ChatGPT, part of me said, ‘I wish I was 26 again.'”

His reasoning: the leverage a handful of people now have with modern AI tools would have been “inconceivable before.” Chesky said that even with Airbnb’s scale and success, a young founder today could plausibly build something just as significant with a fraction of the headcount a project like Airbnb originally required. Small teams, he argued, can now move with a speed and reach that used to take hundreds of employees.

Chesky has been vocal recently about reshaping Airbnb itself around that shift. He’s talked about pushing the company toward becoming a broader “super app” for travel and daily life, and in June said he was exploring starting a separate AI-focused venture alongside his Airbnb role. He has also floated ambitions well beyond travel — citing interest in how AI could remake education and health care, and even musing about building what he’s called an “AI Disney.”

Despite the wistfulness about being 26 again, Chesky admitted he isn’t certain what he’d actually build if he were that age today. The remark lands at a moment when venture investors and founders alike are recalibrating what a “lean startup” looks like, with AI tools increasingly substituting for the large early engineering teams that used to be a precondition for building at scale.
