For crypto investors, the 2021 bull market feels like a different era. In November of that year, Solana and Cardano each carried market values near $70 billion, with active networks, full-time teams, and detailed roadmaps. The risk felt like missing out, not buying in.
Four years later, the picture looks very different. According to research from CoinMarketCap based on prices as of late October, almost two thirds of the 100 largest altcoins from November 2021 have fallen more than 90% from their peaks. Close to half are down more than 95%, and 70 of them touched their lowest price since the 2021 high at some point this year. Over the same stretch, Bitcoin has gained roughly 30%.
Good projects did not mean good investments
The numbers challenge a belief that dominated the last cycle: strong technology and a capable team would eventually translate into token gains. That relationship has proven much weaker than buyers assumed.
Jim Ferraioli, director of digital currencies research and strategy at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said investors often confused network quality with token economics. A strong team, useful technology, and a growing network can all be positive, he explained, but they do not guarantee that the token itself will capture the economic value being created.
The supply problem
Among the 81 tokens that lost at least 70%, circulating supply grew by a median of about 50%, while median market cap fell by roughly 95%. Even if no additional tokens had entered circulation, 77 of those 81 would still have dropped at least 70%.
That breakdown suggests token unlocks are not the only culprit. Alice Liu, head of research at CoinMarketCap, said the popular explanation misses the bigger point. The median losing coin issued about 50% more tokens since 2021 while the market cut what it would pay for the whole project by 95%, she noted. The data points to weak demand, not just rising supply.
The market changed hands
Crypto excluding Bitcoin briefly reached a new market cap high in October 2025, but the composition has shifted. Thirty nine of today’s 100 largest altcoins were not even listed on CoinMarketCap in November 2021. The altcoin market did not die, Liu said. It changed hands.
A few survivors did outperform. Zcash rallied about 646% after a surge in privacy coin interest, while TRON rose 212%. XRP and BNB gained 16% and 22% respectively. BNB also illustrates how supply mechanics can matter. Its market cap is roughly 4% below the 2021 level, but its price is higher because token burns reduced supply by 21%.
Why market cap can mislead
Some projects look healthier than their token price suggests. Solana's market value is only about 10% below its November 2021 peak, yet SOL's price is down 54% because circulating supply nearly doubled. NEAR's market cap actually rose about 20%, but its price fell 51% as supply more than doubled.
The gap between market cap and token price matters because it shows whether a project's overall value is growing or merely being diluted across more tokens. Investors who focus only on price may miss that distinction.
What to watch now
Network activity alone is not enough. Eric Lu, lead economist at the Avalanche Foundation, said substantial network activity does not automatically translate into value for the protocol. Fees may go to validators, developers, or a treasury instead of token holders. Staking rewards paid in newly created tokens can also dilute holders quietly, even as their balance appears to grow.
Ferraioli said he evaluates tokens with a framework similar to growth equity investing. He looks for utility, scarcity, and network effects, then asks what the token's use case is, whether it leads that market, and whether that use case is growing or shrinking relative to the wider crypto ecosystem.
The lesson from the past five years is that a project can build something real and still fail as an investment. What matters is whether network growth creates durable demand for the token, supply stays under control, and the price does not already assume years of future success.
